I’m trying to set up a dashboard in Jira to monitor the progress of my epics. There’s a built-in field called Progression, but I’m having trouble getting it to show up correctly.
I’ve created a simple filter to display epics and added the progression column, but it’s not working as expected. The column appears empty, even though I can see the progress percentage when I open the epic details.
Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
Set up a filter for epics
Added the Progression column to the results
Checked individual epic details to confirm progress is recorded
The issue persists even when the progress is more than 0%. I’m not sure if this is a display problem or if I’m missing a step in the setup.
Has anyone encountered this before? Any suggestions on how to properly show epic progress on a Jira dashboard would be really helpful. Thanks!
I’ve encountered this issue before, and it can be quite frustrating. One solution that worked for me was using the ‘Epic Report’ gadget instead of a simple filter. This gadget provides a visual representation of epic progress, including a progress bar and percentage completion.
To set it up, go to your dashboard, click ‘Add gadget’, and search for ‘Epic Report’. Once added, you can configure it to show specific epics or all epics from a particular project. This approach gives a more comprehensive view of epic progress compared to the basic filter method.
Additionally, ensure your epics have story points or time estimates assigned to their sub-tasks. Jira calculates progress based on these metrics, so without them, the progress might not display correctly.
I’ve been managing Jira dashboards for a while, and I’ve found that the Pie Chart gadget can be surprisingly effective for tracking epic progress. Instead of relying solely on percentages, I create a filter to pull in the epics and then add the Pie Chart gadget to the dashboard. I configure it with the epic filter, set the statistic to Issue Count, and group by Status so you can see a visual breakdown of epics by their current phase.
This method may not display an exact percentage, but it offers a quick visual overview of overall epic health. I also find that combining it with the Epic Report gadget can provide even deeper insights into progress.
hey ryan, i had a similar issue. try using a gadget instead of a filter. the ‘epic progress’ gadget shows percentage completion nicely. just add it to ur dashboard and pick the epics u wanna track. might need to tweak some settings but it worked for me. good luck!
