How does Obsidian compare to Notion for personal organization?

Hey folks,

I’ve been using Notion for a long time to keep my life organized. It’s been great, but lately I’ve been hearing a lot about Obsidian. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with both tools.

What makes Obsidian stand out? Are there specific features that give it an edge over Notion? I’m curious about things like:

  • Ease of use
  • Customization options
  • Data ownership
  • Speed and performance
  • Integration with other apps

Has anyone made the switch from Notion to Obsidian? What was your experience like? I’d love to hear some real-world comparisons to help me decide if it’s worth exploring Obsidian further.

Thanks for any insights you can share!

I’ve used both Obsidian and Notion extensively, and they each have their strengths. Obsidian really shines when it comes to personal knowledge management and note-linking. The local storage aspect means your data is always under your control, which I appreciate.

Obsidian’s speed is noticeably better than Notion, especially with larger databases. The markdown-based system makes it incredibly quick to jot down thoughts and ideas. However, Notion’s collaborative features and more polished UI might be preferable if you’re working in teams.

Customization in Obsidian is unparalleled if you’re willing to dive into community plugins and themes. It’s more of a ‘build your own system’ approach compared to Notion’s pre-built templates.

Ultimately, I use both - Obsidian for personal notes and research, Notion for project management and collaboration. It’s worth exploring Obsidian, especially if you value data ownership and enjoy tinkering with your setup.

I’ve been using Obsidian for about six months now, and it’s completely transformed my personal organization system. The local storage is a game-changer - no more worries about internet connectivity or data privacy. Obsidian’s graph view is incredibly powerful for visualizing connections between notes, something I always felt was lacking in Notion.

Performance-wise, Obsidian is lightning fast, even with thousands of notes. The learning curve is steeper than Notion, but the payoff in terms of flexibility is worth it. I’ve found the community plugins to be a treasure trove of functionality.

One downside is that Obsidian isn’t as visually polished as Notion, and collaboration features are limited. But for personal use, it’s become my go-to tool. The switch took some adjustment, but I wouldn’t go back now.

been using obsidian for a few months now and its awesome for personal stuff. the local storage is great, no worries bout internet or data privacy. graph view is cool for connecting ideas. its super fast even with tons of notes.

bit of a learning curve but worth it. plugins add lots of cool features. not as pretty as notion tho and teamwork stuff is limited. but for personal use its my fave now
