How to access files from my Android's local storage in Google Docs

Assistance needed for opening local files in Google Docs

I’m trying to open and edit some documents that are stored on my Android device’s local storage using the Google Docs app. I’m unsure how to navigate the app to find and select these files. I’ve searched through the different menus but haven’t been able to locate files that haven’t been uploaded to Google Drive. These are standard documents saved within my phone’s file system.

Is there a procedure I should follow to import these files into Google Docs for editing? Do I need to upload them to Google Drive first, or is there a straightforward way to access them directly?

Any detailed instructions would be appreciated, as I’m finding it difficult to resolve this issue myself.

here’s another trick - open your Word or PDF files in their native apps first, then tap the three dots and choose ‘open with Google Docs’. works way better than going through Drive and you don’t have to upload manually.

The Google Docs app can’t access your local files directly. Instead, upload the files through the Google Drive app first, then you can edit them in Google Docs. Simply open Drive, tap the plus icon, select ‘Upload,’ and choose your documents. They will appear in Google Docs automatically for editing. You can also choose the specific Drive folder to keep things organized. While it adds an extra step, it’s more efficient for working with local files, and your edits will sync across your devices once they’re in Google’s system.

Had the same problem with tons of local docs spread across work devices. Manual uploads are a pain.

I set up automated folder watching that syncs new files straight to Drive. No thinking required.

Basically create automation that monitors your document folders and auto-uploads to Google Drive. Files show up in Docs instantly. No more file manager shuffling or remembering to share stuff manually.

I added rules to sort files into the right Drive folders by type or name. Makes everything seamless.

Saves me about 30 minutes daily versus the tap-share-upload dance. Way better than what others suggested.

Google Docs can’t browse your phone’s files directly. You’ve got to work backwards - open your file manager first, find the document you want, then tap it and choose Google Docs from the share menu. This imports it into Google Docs so you can edit it. Your original file stays put, but changes get saved to Google Drive. I was confused by this too when I started using it on mobile. Just remember to start from your file manager, not the Google Docs app.

totally get your frustration. yeah, you gotta upload the files to Google Drive first to edit them in Docs. another way is to share them directly from your file manager. annoying, I know, but that’s how it works!
