I’m creating a document in Google Docs and need help with formatting the table of contents. I want to include page numbers next to each heading in my TOC, but when I use the automatic table of contents feature, it doesn’t display any page numbers.
I’ve tried looking through the formatting options but can’t seem to find a way to enable page numbering in the table of contents. The default TOC only shows the headings without indicating which page they appear on.
Is there a way to make Google Docs show page numbers in the table of contents? Or do I need to create it manually? Any suggestions would be really helpful.
Initially, I struggled with this as well. Make sure to enable page numbers in your document by going to Insert > Page numbers before you create the table of contents. After that, go to Insert > Table of contents, where you’ll see two options. Choose the one that includes page numbers with dotted lines. If you’ve already inserted a TOC without page numbers, simply delete it and add it again using the correct option. Also, ensure your headings are formatted with the designated heading styles for the page numbers to display properly.
Google Docs offers two types of table of contents when you insert one. Navigate to Insert > Table of contents; you’ll find one option with only blue links and another with dotted lines leading to page numbers. Choose the latter for including page numbers. Ensure you’ve set up page numbers in your document first (Insert > Page numbers), or the table of contents won’t have anything to link to. I discovered this the hard way while working on a lengthy report recently.
yea, google docs does have that! when u insert the table of contents, there’s a dropdown for styles. pick the one with page numbers and dots! just make sure page numbering is turned on or it won’t show up. hope that helps!
