How to automatically change contacts from Marketing to Non-marketing status using HubSpot workflows?

Hello community!

I’m working on organizing my HubSpot database and want to automate certain tasks through workflows.

My goal is to automatically update contact status from “Marketing” to “Non-marketing” using an automated workflow process.

I tried following the official HubSpot guide but couldn’t find the option they mention. The documentation talks about using “Set marketing contact status action” and selecting “Set as non-marketing” from a dropdown, but this feature doesn’t seem to exist in my workflow editor.

I’m worried I might need to create a workaround by adding contacts to a specific list first, then manually bulk update their marketing status on a weekly or monthly basis.

Has anyone successfully automated this process? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve hit this HubSpot problem countless times. Their workflow editor is clunky and half the features don’t work right.

Skip the HubSpot wrestling match - I built an automation in Latenode that crushes this. Pull your contact data from HubSpot, run whatever logic you need for status changes, then push updates back automatically.

Best part? You’re not stuck with HubSpot’s restrictions. Want to change contacts based on engagement scores or email opens? No problem. Need it synced with other tools? Done.

Mine runs daily, processes hundreds of contacts, and dodges all those permission headaches people keep mentioning. 10 minutes to set up, then it just works.

Why bang your head against HubSpot’s editor when you can automate it right? Check it out: https://latenode.com

Had the same problem recently - turned out to be a permissions issue. The marketing contact status update only shows up if your account has the right features enabled. Check with your admin to make sure you’ve got access to contact properties. Also heads up - if you’re on a starter plan, this feature might not be included. Once I got my permissions fixed, the option showed up just like the HubSpot docs said it would. Worth checking these settings before you start building workarounds.

Yeah, the feature’s still there but HubSpot moved it around in their recent updates. Go to your workflow editor and look for “Marketing contact status” in the property actions section - don’t search for the old wording from their docs. I ran into this exact same issue last month when they reorganized everything. The dropdown only shows up after you select the contact property for marketing status, so you won’t see it right away. Also make sure you’re in an active workflow - some actions don’t show in draft mode. This definitely works, so you won’t need that manual list workaround.

Check your HubSpot tier first - some plans lock this behind paywalls. I found it under “set property value” rather than hunting for marketing status options. Go to contact properties and marketing contact status shows up in the dropdown. Worked once I switched from legacy workflows to the new tool.
