How to eliminate null and undefined values from JavaScript arrays

I’m working with a JavaScript array that contains some empty spots and undefined values mixed in with actual data. I need to clean this up and get rid of all the empty elements so I only have the real values left.

Is there some built-in method or function that can handle this automatically? Or am I going to have to write my own loop to go through each item and check if it’s empty before keeping it?

I’ve seen some examples online but they all seem different and I’m not sure which approach works best. Some use filter methods while others suggest different techniques. What’s the most reliable way to do this?

Use array.filter(Boolean) - it’s the cleanest way to remove all falsy values (null, undefined, empty strings, 0, false). I’ve used this for years and it handles most cleanup without extra logic. If you need to keep 0 or false but only remove null and undefined, go with array.filter(item => item != null). The loose equality catches both in one check. Learned this after writing separate checks like an idiot. Both beat manual loops for performance and readability. The Boolean approach works great for form data or API responses with random empty values.

Just use arr = arr.filter(x => x !== null && x !== undefined) if you want to be explicit about what you’re removing. The boolean trick works but it’ll also remove zeros and other falsy values you might actually want to keep. Depends what you need.

I deal with messy array cleanup all the time. Instead of writing manual filter logic repeatedly, I just automate it.

I’ve got a Latenode workflow that handles my data preprocessing. It grabs arrays from APIs or forms and strips out nulls, undefined values, empty strings - whatever needs to go. No more copy-pasting the same filter code.

You configure it once and reuse across projects. I’ve got templates for different scenarios - one keeps zeros but removes null/undefined, another kills all falsy values, plus custom ones for specific data types.

When you’re pulling data from multiple sources with different empty value patterns, Latenode normalizes everything before it reaches your main code. Much cleaner than scattered filter calls everywhere.
