How to implement unique headers for first page or section styling in Google Docs?

I’m working on a document in Google Docs and I need to set up different headers for the first page compared to the rest of the document. I also want to know if there’s a way to create separate sections with their own styling within the same document.

Basically, I want the first page to have its own header style, and then the following pages to have a different header. Is this possible in Google Docs? I’ve been looking through the formatting options but can’t seem to find a clear way to do this.

Also, can I create different sections in the same document where each section has its own unique formatting and header styles? Any help would be appreciated since I’m trying to make a professional document with proper page layouts.

totally! just add section breaks by going to Insert > Break > Section Break. this way u can have diff headers in each section. for the first page, use Format > Headers & Footers and enable “Different first page.” perfect for pro docs!

Google Docs does support different first page headers. Go to Insert > Headers & footers and check “Different first page” - this lets you customize the first page separately from the rest. I’ve used this tons of times for reports where the first page needs its own layout. For sections with unique styling, section breaks work well, but keeping formatting consistent across multiple sections can be a pain. Each section break creates its own header/footer area, so you can definitely get different styling throughout your document. Just heads up - complex formatting in Google Docs sometimes acts weird compared to Word, so test everything before you call it done.

That section break method works, but here’s an easier way if you don’t need anything too complex. You can change headers mid-document without section breaks - just edit the header directly on different pages. When you modify a header on any page after the first, it changes all the pages that come after it until you make another edit. Perfect if you only need two header styles in your doc. But if you’re doing something more complex with multiple sections, stick with section breaks. Fair warning though - Google Docs gets wonky with formatting when you have tons of section breaks, especially if you’re copy-pasting between sections. Save your work often with complicated layouts.
