How to mass remove outdated messages from Gmail?

I’m trying to clean up my Gmail inbox. It’s packed with tons of old emails I don’t need anymore. I’ve heard there’s a way to get rid of them all at once instead of going through dozens of pages and deleting 50 at a time.

People keep saying I should look for an option that says something like ‘Pick all chats that fit this search.’ This is supposed to let me choose all the old emails so I can trash them in one go. But I can’t find this option anywhere on the page.

Has anyone done this before? Where exactly should I be looking? I’m feeling pretty lost here and could really use some help. Is there maybe a different way to delete loads of emails quickly that I’m missing? Thanks for any advice you can give!

I’ve tackled this issue before, and here’s what worked for me:

  1. In the Gmail search bar, type ‘older_than:1y’ (or any timeframe you prefer).
  2. Click the small checkbox at the top left of your results to select all visible emails.
  3. Look for text that says ‘Select all conversations that match this search’.
  4. Click that text to grab everything matching your search criteria.
  5. Hit the trash icon to delete them all at once.

Just be cautious - once deleted, you can’t easily get these back. Maybe archive instead if you’re unsure. Also, remember this process might need to be repeated a few times for very large inboxes due to Gmail’s processing limits. Good luck with your inbox cleanup!

I’ve found a method that works well for mass deletion in Gmail. First, use the search bar to filter emails you want to remove. For example, type ‘before:2021/01/01’ to find all emails from before 2021. Once the results load, look for a small checkbox at the top-left of the email list. Click it to select all visible emails, then look for text saying ‘Select all conversations that match this search.’ Click that to grab everything. Finally, click the trash icon to delete them all at once. Be careful though - this action is hard to undo, so double-check your search criteria before deleting. You might need to repeat this process a few times for very large numbers of emails.

hey there! ive been in ur shoes. try using the search like ‘before:2020’, tick the checkbox, then click ‘select all convos’. delete all at once and clear your mess. hope it works.
