How to prevent access to a particular Google Document?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to stop students from accessing a specific Google Doc. It’s got a bunch of proxy sites and games listed, and I want to make sure they can’t get to it.

I’m using GoGuardian and I’ve already put the document ID in the deny list. But for some reason, it’s not working. Students can still open the doc.

Does anyone know a trick to make this work? Maybe there’s a setting I missed or another way to block it?

I’d really appreciate any help or ideas. It’s important to keep our school network safe and make sure kids are focusing on their work. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

As a fellow educator, I’ve faced similar challenges with restricting access to certain documents. One effective method I’ve found is to change the sharing settings of the Google Doc itself. Instead of relying solely on third-party tools like GoGuardian, go to the document, click on ‘Share,’ and set it to ‘Restricted.’ This way, only specific email addresses you approve can access it.

Another trick that’s worked for me is moving the document to a completely separate Google account that students don’t know about. This makes it nearly impossible for them to find or access it.

If you’re still having trouble, consider converting the document to a PDF and hosting it on a password-protected page on your school’s website. This gives you more control over who can view the content.

Remember, tech-savvy students can be quite resourceful, so it’s often a game of staying one step ahead. Good luck!

hey mate, have u tried using a url shortener? make a new short link for the doc and block that instead. might trick GoGuardian into working properly. also, maybe put the content on a diffrent platform like notion or padlet? those can b easier to lock down sometimez. good luck blocking those sneaky kids!

Have you considered using Google’s built-in content restrictions? In Google Admin, you can set up rules to block specific documents based on their content. This might be more effective than relying on GoGuardian alone.

Another approach is to use Google Groups. Create a group for staff, share the document only with that group, and ensure students aren’t members. This way, even if they somehow get the link, they won’t be able to access it.

If these don’t work, you might want to look into more robust web filtering solutions. Some schools use advanced firewalls that can block specific URLs at the network level, which could be more foolproof than software-based solutions.

Remember, though, that determined students often find ways around restrictions. It might be worth addressing the root issue through digital citizenship education alongside technical measures.
