I’m having trouble with our team’s Google Drive setup and hoping someone can help. We have a main shared folder with lots of subfolders and documents inside. The big issue is that people keep accidentally moving folders around when they don’t mean to. It’s really easy to grab a folder by mistake and drop it somewhere else, which messes up our whole organization system.
I’ve been trying to find a way to turn off this drag and drop feature, either through Google Workspace admin settings or maybe even through browser settings. I’ve looked everywhere in the admin console but can’t seem to find any option to disable folder dragging.
Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Is there a setting I’m missing that would prevent folders from being moved around so easily? Even a browser-based solution would work if it stops the accidental dragging, even if it affects other websites too.
Google Drive’s drag-and-drop feature can indeed cause issues. While you cannot disable it through the admin console, one effective solution is to restructure folder permissions. By assigning a service account to own the main organization folders and giving team members either Commenter or Viewer access, you can protect the integrity of your file organization. Create separate subfolders for collaboration where users can have editing rights. This way, the primary folder structure remains intact, reducing the likelihood of accidental movements while still allowing teamwork.
We encountered a similar problem and discovered a practical alternative. Instead of attempting to disable the drag-and-drop feature, consider setting up email alerts for your shared drive notifications. This way, you can promptly address any accidental folder movements. Additionally, you can utilize Google Drive shortcuts to share files across various locations without physically moving them. Although it may take some getting used to, this approach can significantly reduce the need to repeatedly reorganize your folder setup.
totally get it, it’s frustraiting! We face similar issues, so we just set permissions so most can only view. Only a couple get editing rights. it cuts down on those accidental moves a lot!
