How to set a darker green color in Google Sheets number formatting

I’m currently working on formatting percentage values in Google Sheets and need some guidance on using color in custom number formats. The code I’m utilizing is:

[Green]#,##0.0%;[Red](#,##0.0%)

This results in:

  • Positive values: 98,765.0% displayed in green
  • Negative values: (98,765.0%) shown in red

However, the green appears too light and unreadable. I’m looking to darken it but can’t seem to find the right code. I’ve attempted various alternatives including [Dark Green], [DarkGreen], [forest green], and even hex codes like [#008000], but nothing seems to work. Can anyone suggest the proper syntax for a darker green in custom number formats in Google Sheets?

totally, color stuff in sheets can b frustrating. if scripting’s too much, u can create a custom theme for more options. yeah, doing it manual is a hassle, especially with big data, but it works!

Google Sheets doesn’t let you use custom colors in number formatting like Excel does. You’re stuck with basic colors - Green, Red, Blue, Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Black, and White. No hex codes or variations allowed. I hit this same wall when building budget sheets. My workaround: use a plain number format like #,##0.0%;(#,##0.0%) and handle colors through conditional formatting instead. Set up rules where positive values get your exact green shade using the color picker. Takes an extra step, but you get precise control over the color. Plus it’s way easier to keep things consistent across multiple sheets.

Google Sheets is pretty limited with colors in custom number formatting - way worse than Excel. You can’t adjust the intensity of standard colors like Green, Red, Blue, or use hex codes in number format conditions. They’re just hardcoded.

I hit this same wall building financial dashboards. Here’s what worked: ditch the number format colors and use conditional formatting instead. Set up rules where positive percentages get a custom dark green background or font color with hex codes. Keep your number format simple like #,##0.0%;(#,##0.0%) without any color codes.

This gives you way more control over the exact green shade and looks better across different screens.
