How to shift lines vertically in Google Docs on a Chromebook?

Hey everyone,

I’m working with Google Docs on my Chromebook and I’m stuck. I can’t figure out how to move lines up or down easily. In Microsoft Word, I could do this quickly to rearrange my lists or paragraphs. But here, I’m forced to cut and paste each line manually. It’s driving me crazy!

Does anyone know if there’s a keyboard shortcut or a faster way to do this in Google Docs on a Chromebook? I’m really hoping to avoid the tedious cut-and-paste method. Any tips or tricks would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

As someone who’s been using Google Docs on a Chromebook for years, I can relate to your frustration. One method I’ve found effective is utilizing the ‘Outline’ feature. If you structure your document with headings, you can easily rearrange entire sections by dragging them in the outline view. This works great for larger chunks of text.

For more precise control, I often use the ‘Ctrl + Shift + Up/Down Arrow’ combo to select lines, then ‘Ctrl + X’ to cut and ‘Ctrl + V’ to paste. It’s not as smooth as Word, but it becomes second nature with practice.

Another tip: If you’re working with lists, consider using the ‘Increase indent’ and ‘Decrease indent’ options (Tab and Shift+Tab) to reorganize items. It’s not exactly moving lines, but it can help structure your content more efficiently.

hey there! i found a neat trick for this. try using alt + shift + up/down arrow. it moves the whole line ur cursor’s on. works on paragraphs too. not perfect but better than cut-paste. hope this helps!

I’ve found a workaround that might help you out. While Google Docs doesn’t have a direct ‘move line’ feature like Word, you can use the Alt + Up/Down Arrow shortcuts on your Chromebook to move entire paragraphs. It’s not as granular as moving individual lines, but it’s faster than cut and paste for most situations. Just place your cursor anywhere in the paragraph you want to move, then use the shortcut. For finer control, you can also try selecting specific lines and using Ctrl + X to cut, then arrow keys to navigate, and Ctrl + V to paste. It takes some getting used to, but it becomes second nature after a while.
