Hey everyone,
I’m having a bit of trouble with Google Docs. It keeps trying to fix my grammar, but it’s messing up my writing style. I use some informal language and slang in my work, and Google Docs doesn’t seem to like it.
Is there a way to turn off this feature? Or maybe customize it so it doesn’t change certain words or phrases? I’ve looked through the settings, but I can’t find anything that helps.
Any advice would be great. Thanks!
I understand your frustration with Google Docs’ autocorrect feature. While it’s designed to help, it can certainly interfere with personal writing styles. One effective solution I’ve found is to use the ‘Undo’ shortcut (Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z) immediately after an unwanted autocorrection occurs. This quickly reverts the change without disrupting your flow. Additionally, you might consider drafting in a plain text editor first, then copying your work into Google Docs for final formatting. This approach preserves your original text while still allowing you to utilize Google Docs’ collaborative features when needed.
I’ve dealt with this frustration too. What worked for me was creating a custom dictionary in Google Docs. You can add your slang terms and informal phrases to it, so the autocorrect feature won’t flag them anymore. It’s a bit time-consuming at first, but it’s worth it in the long run. Also, I found that using the ‘Suggesting’ mode instead of ‘Editing’ gives me more control over which changes to accept. This way, you can review the suggestions without them automatically applying to your text. Hope this helps you maintain your unique writing style!
yo, ive had the same issue! go to Tools > Preferences and uncheck ‘Automatically correct spelling’ and ‘Use smart quotes.’ that should stop most of the annoying autocorrections. if u want more control, u can add words to the personal dictionary too. hope this helps!
