How to transform AI-generated videos into 3D After Effects compositions

I’ve been working with some AI video generation tools lately and I’m wondering about the best approach to bring these clips into After Effects as proper 3D scenes.

These generators create particle effects and blur that look fine in 2D but completely fall apart when you separate layers for 3D space. Here’s what works: use Roto Brush to isolate foreground elements first, then add separate motion blur to each layer after converting to 3D. AI motion blur is fake - it doesn’t follow actual camera physics. Here’s something people don’t talk about - AI footage has compression artifacts that look terrible once you push it through 3D transforms. Always grab the highest quality export from your AI tool, even if renders take forever. For depth mapping, I use the built-in Depth Matte effect with hand-painted masks. It’s a pain but gives you way more control than trying to extract depth data that probably doesn’t exist anyway. Work in passes - rough depth first, then refine each layer.
