Is a dedicated transactional email service necessary, or will an SMTP plugin suffice?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice about email sending for an online store I’m managing. Right now, we’re using Mailgun for sending out order confirmations and other important emails. The thing is, the store owner wants to save some money and stop paying for Mailgun.

I’m wondering if switching to a free SMTP plugin would work just as well. Will it be reliable enough for sending out all those important emails to customers? Or is it better to stick with a paid service like Mailgun?

I’d really appreciate any insights from folks who have experience with both options. What are the pros and cons of each? Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve been in your shoes before, and I can tell you that sticking with a dedicated service like Mailgun is definitely worth it in the long run. When I switched to an SMTP plugin to save money, I ended up losing more in customer trust and wasted time.

The plugin worked fine most of the time, but there were occasional hiccups where important emails didn’t get delivered. This led to confused customers and extra support tickets. Plus, troubleshooting delivery issues was a nightmare without proper tracking tools.

If your store is growing, the benefits of a reliable service far outweigh the costs. Better deliverability means happier customers and fewer headaches for you. Maybe you could look into other transactional email providers that might offer better rates? But whatever you do, I’d strongly advise against going the free SMTP route for a serious online store.

i’ve used both and honestly, smtp plugins can work fine for smaller stores. but as u grow, dedicated services like mailgun become worth it. they offer better deliverability and tracking. plus, dealing with spam issues is WAY easier. if ur store is doing well, stick with mailgun. the peace of mind is worth the cost imho.

Having managed several e-commerce sites, I can say that dedicated transactional email services like Mailgun are generally worth the investment. While SMTP plugins can work, they often lack crucial features for a growing business. Deliverability rates tend to be lower with free options, which means important emails might end up in spam folders. This can lead to customer service issues and lost revenue.

Moreover, dedicated services offer valuable analytics and debugging tools. These help you track email performance and quickly resolve any sending problems. The cost of a service like Mailgun is typically minimal compared to the potential issues and time spent troubleshooting with a free SMTP plugin.

If budget is a concern, consider negotiating with Mailgun or exploring other transactional email providers. Many offer competitive pricing for growing businesses. In the long run, the reliability and features of a dedicated service often outweigh the initial cost savings of a free plugin.
