Is Figma's claim on 'Dev mode' terminology justified?

I’m confused about Figma’s stance on the term ‘Dev mode’. As someone who’s been in the tech world for a while, I’ve seen ‘developer mode’ (often shortened to ‘dev mode’) used in countless tools and apps for years.

It’s got me wondering:

  1. Are they really trying to own this common phrase?
  2. Is this just a publicity stunt?
  3. Do they have a legitimate reason for this claim?

I mean, it’s like trying to trademark ‘File menu’ or ‘Save button’. It seems bizarre to me. Has anyone else heard about this or have any insights? I’m genuinely curious about what’s going on here and if there’s something I’m missing.

What do you all think? Is there any merit to Figma’s position, or is this just a weird move on their part?

I’ve been using Figma for a while now, and I gotta say, this move surprised me. From my experience, ‘dev mode’ is pretty much industry standard terminology. I remember using it way back when I was just starting out in web development.

That being said, Figma’s implementation of their Dev Mode is pretty slick. It’s got some unique features that make the handoff process smoother. Maybe they’re trying to differentiate their specific version of Dev Mode from others?

Still, claiming ownership over such a widely used term seems like a stretch. It could backfire and alienate some of their user base, especially developers who’ve been using the term for years. I’m curious to see how this plays out and if they’ll backpedal if there’s enough pushback from the community.

figma’s claim seems pretty ridiculous, tbh. ‘dev mode’ is way common. maybe they’re just tryna get attention? idk man, it’s kinda like apple ownering ‘app’ or something. seems like a stretch, but who knows?
