Is it normal for a blank Google Doc to use 169MB of RAM?

I find it strange that when I open an empty Google Docs document in my browser, it shows around 169MB of RAM usage in the task manager. This seems excessive for a simple blank file. I’m curious if this is standard for Google Docs or if there might be an issue with my device. Has anyone else noticed such high memory consumption? I rely on Google Docs regularly for my tasks, so I would appreciate any thoughts or advice on this matter.

That memory usage is normal but annoying as hell. Google Docs loads everything upfront whether you need it or not.

I hit this same problem when our team had tons of collaborative documents. 15+ Google Docs tabs would kill my browser.

I ended up automating our document workflows completely. Instead of everyone working directly in Google Docs and burning RAM, I built automated processes that handle document creation, updates, and sharing in the background.

Someone submits a form or updates a spreadsheet? The system auto-generates the formatted document and shares it with the right people. No more heavy Google Docs tabs open all day.

The automation does the heavy lifting while we work with lightweight interfaces. Cut browser memory usage by 70% and made everything way faster.

If you’re doing regular document work, automating those processes will solve your RAM issues completely. Check out https://latenode.com

yeah, it’s kinda crazy! google docs can be memory heavy, even on blank docs. I’ve noticed my browser eats up memory too. if it’s too much, maybe consider switching to lighter options like notepad or wordpad sometimes.

Yeah, that’s pretty normal for Google Docs unfortunately. These web apps load tons of JavaScript and real-time sync features even for blank docs. Your browser has to fire up the whole editing environment - spell check, collaboration tools, all the UI stuff - no matter what you’re working on. I’ve seen the same RAM usage across different browsers with Google Docs. Chrome’s especially bad with web apps. If performance is bugging you, try Google Keep for quick notes instead. But if you want the full Docs experience, you’re stuck with that memory overhead.
