I recently came across some discussions suggesting that OpenAI may alter its organizational structure. Initially, they operated as a nonprofit, but now there’s speculation about their move towards a typical for-profit organization. Can anyone provide insights into whether this change is confirmed? I’m eager to learn how this could impact their mission and AI advancements. Will they maintain their focus on ensuring AI benefits everyone, or will profit be their primary objective? Has there been any official word regarding this potential transition? I’m interested in grasping the effects of such a significant change in their business approach and whether it’s been finalized or remains a topic of discussion.
i think it’s true but it’s a mix of both worlds now. they’ve set up OpenAI LP which allows for-profit operations while still having some nonprofit principles. it’s not fully done yet, but seems like they need the cash to keep the research going, u kno?
yeah theres been reports about this for months now. they’re trying to restructure into a public benefit corp or something similar. the nonprofit board would still have some control but investors could get actual returns. makes sense tbh - training these models costs billions and donations alone wont cut it anymore.
