Keyboard shortcut for reordering lines in Google Docs on Chromebook?

Hey everyone! I’m kinda stuck here. Just switched from MS Word to Google Docs on my Chromebook and I’m missing a super handy feature. In Word, I could easily move lines up and down with a quick keyboard shortcut. It was great for fixing up lists or shuffling paragraphs around.

Now I’m stuck cutting and pasting every single line I want to move. It’s driving me nuts! Does anyone know if there’s a similar shortcut in Google Docs? Or maybe a trick to make this easier? I’d really appreciate any tips or workarounds you might have. Thanks in advance!

hey there! i feel ur pain, google docs can be tricky. sadly, there’s no built-in shortcut for moving lines :frowning: but here’s a workaround: use ctrl+shift+up/down to select whole lines, then cut and paste. not as smooth as word, but it helps. good luck!

Unfortunately, Google Docs doesn’t offer a native keyboard shortcut for reordering lines like MS Word does. However, there’s a browser extension called ‘Line Mover for Google Docs’ that might solve your problem. It adds the ability to move lines up and down with Alt+Up/Down arrows. I’ve been using it for a while and it’s quite reliable. Just be cautious about granting permissions to third-party extensions. Alternatively, you could consider using the outline view (accessible via Tools > Document outline) for easier reorganization of larger sections. It’s not as granular as line-by-line movement, but it can be helpful for restructuring documents.

As someone who’s been in your shoes, I can relate to the frustration of losing that handy line-moving feature. While Google Docs doesn’t have a built-in shortcut, I’ve found a workaround that’s become second nature to me now. I use Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Up/Down to select the current line, then Ctrl+X to cut, arrow key to move the cursor, and Ctrl+V to paste. It’s not as smooth as Word, but with practice, it becomes pretty quick. Another tip: for longer documents, I often use the outline view (View > Show document outline) to drag and drop entire sections. It’s saved me tons of time when I need to reorganize my thesis chapters or lengthy reports. Hope this helps streamline your workflow a bit!
