Linux alternative for Google Drive desktop sync

Hey everyone,

I’m thinking about switching from Windows to Linux but I’m worried about losing Google Drive desktop sync. It’s a big part of my workflow and I can’t find an official Linux version.

Are there any good alternatives that work well on Linux? I need something reliable because my work files are super important. I’ve seen a few options online but I’m not sure which ones to trust.

Has anyone here used a Google Drive sync tool on Linux? What was your experience like? Any recommendations or warnings?

Thanks for any help you can give. I really want to make the switch to Linux but this Google Drive issue is holding me back.

As someone who made the switch to Linux a while back, I totally get your concern about Google Drive sync. I stumbled upon rclone and it’s been a game-changer for me. It’s a command-line tool, which might seem daunting at first, but trust me, it’s powerful and flexible once you get the hang of it.

What I love about rclone is its versatility - it doesn’t just work with Google Drive, but with a ton of other cloud services too. The initial setup takes a bit of time, but after that, it’s smooth sailing. You can set up automated syncs using cron jobs, which is super handy for keeping your work files up-to-date.

One thing to keep in mind though - it doesn’t provide real-time syncing like the official Google Drive app. But for most workflows, scheduled syncs work just fine. Plus, being open-source, it’s constantly improving.

If you’re comfortable with a bit of command-line work, give rclone a shot. It’s been reliable for me and might just be the solution you’re looking for in your Linux journey.

hey surfingwave, i’ve been using overGrive for a while now. it’s pretty solid for syncing google drive on linux. not free, but works great. easy to setup and use. only hiccup is occasional sync delays, but nothin major. give it a try if you want something simple and reliable for your work stuff.

I’ve been using Insync on Linux for a few years now and it’s been rock-solid for Google Drive syncing. It’s not free, but the one-time purchase has been worth it for me. The setup is straightforward and it integrates well with most file managers. One nice feature is the ability to selectively sync folders, which helps manage storage on smaller SSDs. The only downside I’ve noticed is that large initial syncs can be a bit slow, but day-to-day use is seamless. If you’re looking for a reliable, full-featured option that’s actively maintained, Insync is definitely worth considering for your Linux Google Drive needs.
