I’m searching for good tracing solutions for my AI applications. What surprises me is that most AI boilerplates and starter templates completely ignore the monitoring aspect, even though tracking and observability are crucial for any AI SaaS that wants to deliver real value.
I found these options mentioned in Vercel’s AI SDK documentation:
BrainTrust
Laminar
Langfuse
LangSmith
LangWatch
Traceloop
Has anyone here tested these platforms? Are there other monitoring tools worth considering? I don’t need a free solution, but the pricing should be reasonable for smaller projects.
Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations!
Everyone’s missing the obvious - you don’t need another SaaS tool eating your budget for AI tracing.
I’ve tried this with multiple projects. Started with LangSmith, moved to Langfuse, then realized I was paying for fancy dashboards when I just needed data control.
Game changer? Build your own monitoring with automation. My workflow captures all AI API calls, logs responses, tracks costs, and dumps everything into my database. Takes an hour to build and you own everything.
Best part - total customization. Want specific metrics? Add them. Cost spike alerts? Easy. Filter traces by user or feature? Done.
No per-trace fees or usage limits. Just unlimited monitoring that’s basically free. Plus you’re not stuck with someone else’s interface or data format.
I’ve built this for three AI projects now. Beats every paid solution - more flexible, way cheaper, and you actually know what’s happening.
Been using LangWatch for 6 months on two projects. Love that they charge per trace instead of compute time - way more predictable pricing. Docs aren’t great but support actually gets back to you fast. Here’s what most people miss: integration complexity matters huge. Some tools make you rewrite half your code, others just need a few wrapper functions. LangWatch is the easy route - saved me tons of time. Also check out Helicone if you’re using OpenAI APIs. Not on your list but it’s solid for request logging and caching. Free tier works great for early projects, paid plans don’t break the bank. Start with whatever plugs into your current stack easiest. You can always switch later when you need fancier features.
I’ve used three of these in production. Traceloop’s solid - works right out of the box. We deployed it for an ML service last year and setup took maybe 10 minutes.
BrainTrust has better analytics but costs more. The dashboards look nice but you mostly just need basic trace viewing anyway.
One missing tool is Weights & Biases. Their monitoring isn’t just for training now - we use it for inference tracking on a few services and it handles high volume well.
For smaller projects go with Traceloop or Langfuse. Both have reasonable pricing and won’t kill your budget while you’re figuring out product-market fit.
langfuse is pretty good! ive been usin it for a while now and it’s a lot more affordable than langsmith. The interface is nice, and it integrates well with my projects. The docs are not the best tho, but the discord group really helps out!
