Looking for alternatives to iCloud for photo/video storage. Is Google Drive a good option?

Hey everyone,

I’m running out of space on my iCloud and I’m not ready to upgrade my plan yet. I’ve been thinking about using Google Drive to store my important photos and videos so I can free up space on my device.

Is this a smart move? I don’t have tons of media, just want to make sure I don’t lose anything important. Are there other services that might work better for this?

I’m pretty new to cloud storage options outside of iCloud, so any advice would be great. Thanks!

Google Drive is definitely a solid alternative to iCloud. I’ve been using it for years to store photos and videos, and it’s been reliable. The free 15GB storage is generous, and you can always upgrade if needed. One big advantage is the cross-platform compatibility - works great on both iOS and Android.

That said, don’t overlook other options like Dropbox or OneDrive. They offer similar features and might have better integration with your workflow. Personally, I use a combination of Google Drive and an external hard drive for backups. Whatever you choose, make sure to enable automatic backups so you don’t have to think about it.

Just remember, no cloud service is 100% foolproof. Always keep important files in multiple places for peace of mind.

I’ve been in your shoes before, and I can tell you from experience that Google Drive is a solid choice. I switched from iCloud to Google Drive a couple years ago and haven’t looked back. The interface is intuitive, and the automatic backup feature is a lifesaver. Plus, the ability to easily share folders with family members has been incredibly useful for us.

One thing to keep in mind though - while Google Drive is great for general storage, Google Photos might be a better fit specifically for your media. It offers unlimited storage for “high quality” photos and videos (which are still pretty good), and has some neat features like automatic organization and face recognition.

Whatever you choose, just make sure to regularly check that your backups are actually happening. I learned that lesson the hard way when I thought my vacation photos were backing up, but they weren’t. Better safe than sorry!

just make sure to backup important stuff in multiple places tho, ya never know
