I’m searching for a good self-hosted solution that works similar to Notion. I want something I can run on my own server instead of relying on cloud services. I already tested a few options like Obsidian and Anytype, but they didn’t meet my needs. Obsidian felt more like a note-taking app than a full workspace, and Anytype was missing some features I wanted. I need something that can handle databases, pages, and has good organization features like Notion does. Has anyone found a solid alternative that they’re happy with? I’m open to trying different options as long as they can be self-hosted. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!
Trilium Notes is worth checking out. I switched after getting fed up with cloud solutions and it’s been rock solid on my VPS for over a year. The hierarchical structure feels more like a real workspace than typical note apps, plus you can add custom attributes that work like database fields. Docker setup is pretty straightforward, though it took me a weekend to configure everything properly. The web interface is snappy and handles tons of data without issues. Main downside is the learning curve - it’s not as intuitive as Notion at first, but the flexibility is worth it once you get the hang of it.
I’ve been running Outline on my home server for eight months - it’s solid. Docker setup was easy, and collaborative editing works great with multiple users. Clean interface, but it’s built for documentation, not databases like Notion. For databases, I use Baserow alongside it. Gives me proper tables and relational data. This combo beats trying to find one perfect tool. Outline handles my knowledge base, Baserow handles structured data. Both are actively maintained with good community support when you hit setup issues.
AppFlowy might be exactly what you’re looking for! I’ve been using it for about 6 months now and it’s basically Notion but self-hosted. Has databases, kanban boards, the works. Setup was pretty straightforward with Docker, though the mobile app is still rough around the edges. Way better than splitting between multiple tools.
