I recently created a new Mailgun account and ran into a weird problem. I registered using my personal email address [email protected] but I didn’t add any payment details or verify a custom domain yet. I only completed the basic account verification process.
The strange thing is that my emails only get delivered when I send them to [email protected] (the same address I used during registration). When I try sending to any other email address like friends or colleagues, the messages just don’t go through at all.
Has anyone else experienced this limitation? I need to be able to send emails to multiple different recipients, not just my own address. What am I missing in the setup process?
yep, u hit the nail on the head! mailgun’s free acct is kinda limited like that. only to verified addresses while in sandbox mode. if u wanna send to others, just add a payment method to verify your acct. it’s their way of keeping spam down.
I hit this exact issue when I started with Mailgun six months ago. You’re seeing normal behavior for new accounts without billing info. Mailgun puts your account in sandbox mode, so you can only send to pre-authorized addresses. Your signup email ([email protected]) gets authorized automatically - that’s why it works while others don’t. Fix is simple: add a payment method. Once you do, Mailgun upgrades you from sandbox to production mode in minutes. Then you can send to anyone without restrictions. It’s just their way of stopping spammers from abusing the platform.
Yeah, this is normal for new Mailgun accounts. They stick you in “sandbox mode” which only lets you send emails to authorized recipients. Since you signed up with [email protected], that address gets whitelisted automatically for testing. It’s their anti-spam thing to stop people from abusing the service. You’ll need to add payment info to lift the restrictions and send to any email address. Once you add a valid payment method, they’ll remove the sandbox limits and you can send normally. Usually takes just a few minutes after they verify your payment.
