I’ve got about a dozen JavaScript automation projects running, and each one uses different AI models—some need Claude for reasoning, others use GPT for speed, a few use specialized models for specific tasks. Right now I’m spreading API keys across multiple services, tracking which key belongs to which project, and it’s becoming a security and organizational nightmare.
Every time I spin up a new project, I’m going through the same dance: sign up for API access, generate keys, store them somewhere, hope I don’t accidentally commit them to git, and keep track of which models I’m paying for separately.
I’m wondering if there’s a saner way to handle this. Does anyone manage multiple projects with different model needs without ending up with a spreadsheet of credentials?
I’m specifically interested in solutions that let me pick models flexibly without multiplying the number of subscriptions I’m juggling.

Model selection across projects becomes simpler if you standardize what each project type uses. Like all data analysis projects use Claude, all content gen uses GPT. Not always possible but when you can, it reduces decision overhead.

The credential sprawl issue is real and gets worse with scale. I recommend centralizing API key management before you hit more than five projects. Use a secrets manager—AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault, even Doppler—and have your automation projects reference keys from there.
For model selection, document which models work best for which tasks. When you onboard a new project, you reference those patterns instead of starting decisions from scratch.
