Missing Jira project after long period of inactivity - how to recover or understand what happened?

Hi everyone! I’m having trouble with a Jira project that seems to have disappeared. I created this project about a year and a half ago for tracking some development tasks, but I haven’t logged into Jira since then due to other priorities.

Now when I try to access my workspace, the project is completely gone. I can’t see it in my project list or find any traces of it. I’m wondering if there are any automatic cleanup policies that remove inactive projects after a certain time period?

Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m trying to figure out if this is normal behavior or if there might be another explanation. Any suggestions on how I could potentially recover this project or at least understand what caused it to vanish would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!

oh man this is frustating! had somthing similar happen but it turned out i was logging into wrong atlassian account - do you have multiple emails registered? also check if someone else had admin access and maybe archived it without telling you. worth checking the trash/archived projects section too before panicking about data loss.

I’ve encountered a similar issue with a dormant Jira project in the past. It’s worth noting that Jira often implements cleanup policies for inactive projects, especially on free plans. Typically, if a project hasn’t been accessed for around 90 to 180 days, there’s a risk of it being archived or deleted. I suggest you revisit your email for any notices from Jira regarding inactivity warnings or account issues that may have been sent during that time. If you’re on a paid plan, the policies might not be as strict, but checking the admin console for updates on your account status could also be helpful. Regrettably, if the project has indeed been purged, recovery options are quite limited unless you reach out to Jira support directly, although their capacity to restore data can be constrained.

This happened to my team about two years ago and it was quite frustrating. In our case, the project disappeared because our Jira Cloud instance had expired due to non-payment of the subscription. Since you mentioned it’s been a year and a half, I’d first check if your billing information is still valid and whether your subscription is active. Sometimes payment methods expire and Atlassian will suspend access after multiple failed attempts to charge your account. You should also verify you’re logging into the correct site URL, as organizations sometimes migrate between different Jira instances. Contact Atlassian support immediately if you suspect data loss - they maintain backups for a limited time even after deletion, but the window is narrow. In my experience, they were able to restore our project data within 30 days of deletion, though it required escalating the support ticket.
