Moving website from Squarespace to WordPress - best approach needed

Hey everyone! I have a client who really wants to switch their site from Squarespace over to WordPress. The website has about 20 pages, not many external links pointing to it, and barely shows up in search results. I’m thinking the easiest way would be to build a completely new WordPress site, shut down the old Squarespace one, and then move the domain name over. Does this sound like a good plan or am I forgetting something important from an SEO perspective?

sounds good, but make sure you download all your images and media files before you kill the squarespace site. i’ve done that mistake before and had to recreate everything from scratch lol. also check for any custom code or forms that’ll need rebuilding in wordpress - squarespace handles some stuff differently than wp.

Your approach makes sense with the low search visibility and few external links. But I’d still set up 301 redirects from old URLs to new ones - this prevents broken links down the road and saves whatever link equity you have. Export all your blog posts and content from Squarespace before shutting it down. I’ve seen people lose content because they assumed it was backed up elsewhere. Domain transfers are usually easy, but allow extra time for DNS propagation. Keep the Squarespace site running until you’re satisfied with the WordPress version and everything’s properly tested.

I’ve migrated several sites from Squarespace to WordPress, and your plan looks solid, especially given the minimal SEO concerns. However, be aware that Squarespace’s export tool may not be very effective, so you might find yourself copying content manually. Remember to unlock the domain in Squarespace and retrieve the authorization code before starting on WordPress. It’s also wise to keep basic analytics running during the transition to monitor for any drops in traffic. Timing the switch when your traffic is low can help minimize disruption. With just 20 pages and low search visibility, you should be well-positioned for a smooth transition.
