Hey everyone,
I just read something that’s got me thinking. The head honcho of a big music streaming platform said making content these days costs almost nothing. This has a lot of people mad, especially artists and their fans.
What do you guys think about this? Is it really that cheap to create music now? Or is the boss just out of touch with what artists go through?
I’m curious to hear from any musicians or content creators here. How much does it actually cost you to make your stuff? And for the rest of us, do you think this kind of statement affects how we value music and other content?
Let’s chat about it!
lol that boss is clueless. i’ve tried making music and it ain’t cheap or easy. decent mic? hundreds. software? not free. time to learn? priceless. and don’t get me started on promo costs.
he’s prob never tried creating anything himself. maybe he should give it a shot before talkin nonsense
As someone who’s been in the music industry for over a decade, I can say that executive’s statement is pretty misguided. Sure, technology has made some aspects of production more accessible, but creating quality content still requires significant investment.
For starters, professional-grade equipment isn’t cheap. A decent home studio setup can easily run into thousands of dollars. Then there’s the time investment - writing, recording, and producing a single track can take weeks or even months of dedicated work.
Let’s not forget about marketing and promotion costs. In today’s saturated market, getting your music heard often requires hiring PR teams or running ad campaigns. And if you’re making music videos? That’s a whole other level of expense.
The idea that content creation is nearly free undermines the value of artists’ work and ignores the very real financial challenges many creators face. It’s disappointing to hear industry leaders perpetuate such misconceptions.
