OpenAI postpones launch of their open-source model once more

Has anyone else noticed that OpenAI keeps pushing back the release date for their open model? This is getting frustrating as a developer who was really looking forward to using it in my projects.

I was planning to integrate this model into my application stack, but now I have to keep adjusting my timeline. The delays are making it hard to plan ahead for my development roadmap.

Does anyone know what might be causing these repeated postponements? Are there technical issues they’re dealing with, or is this more about business strategy? I’m curious if other developers are experiencing similar planning challenges because of these delays.

Would love to hear thoughts from the community about how you’re handling these uncertain release schedules.

i feel you on that! it’s super annoying when timelines keep shifting. i’m guessing they’re dealing with technical issues. in the meantime, maybe try experimenting with other models? good luck!

The delays are probably more about safety testing and regulatory stuff than actual tech problems. OpenAI’s getting hammered by regulators and the AI safety crowd, so they’re likely being extra careful to hit all the safety marks before launch. Plus, from a business angle, why rush out an open model when their paid versions are still making bank? I’ve dealt with similar situations where outside pressure makes you way more conservative than you’d like. For planning, I’d build your setup to work with any model so you can easily switch if needed. This has saved me tons of time when dealing with vendors who keep changing their roadmaps.

Been through this exact thing with multiple AI vendors over the past couple years. Same pattern every time - they start optimistic, then keep pushing dates back. It’s never just one problem. You’ve got technical issues with model alignment, crazy computational requirements for training, plus their internal quality standards. And now there’s way more regulatory red tape adding extra review layers. I just assume any release date will slip 3-6 months minimum and plan around that. Started building flexible architectures that work with different model APIs so I’m not stuck waiting for one specific release. Frustrating as hell but it’s just how this space works now.
