Quick Tip: Create a disposable email address using your Gmail account

Need a throwaway email address but don’t want to set up a new account? Here’s a handy trick using your existing Gmail:

  1. Change the domain in your email from ‘gmail.com’ to ‘googlemail.com
  2. Set up an auto-delete filter for emails sent to this address

This way, you can use a temporary email without cluttering your main inbox. It’s perfect for signing up to websites you don’t want to receive regular emails from.

To set up the filter in Gmail:

  1. Go to Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses
  2. Click ‘Create a new filter’
  3. In the ‘To’ field, enter: *@googlemail.com
  4. Choose ‘Delete it’ in the next step

Now all emails sent to your ‘googlemail.com’ address will be automatically sent to trash. Remember to empty your trash regularly if you’re concerned about privacy!

I’ve got another approach that’s been a game-changer for me. I use SimpleLogin, a service that creates unlimited email aliases that forward to your real address. It’s been incredibly useful for managing my online presence.

The beauty of SimpleLogin is that you can create unique aliases for each service you sign up for, and if one starts getting spam, you can just disable that alias without affecting your main email. Plus, it’s open-source, so you can even self-host if you’re privacy-conscious.

I’ve found it particularly handy for online shopping and forum registrations. It’s not free, but the peace of mind and inbox organization it provides have been worth every penny for me. Just thought I’d throw this out there as another option to consider!

nice tip! i use temp-mail.org for throwaway emails. it’s quick and doesn’t need any setup. but your method is good for when u want emails to actually reach you. might try the + trick JackWolf69 mentioned too. thx for sharing!

I’ve been using this method for years and it’s incredibly useful. One thing to add is that you can also use the plus sign (+) in your Gmail address for a similar effect.

For example, if your email is [email protected], you can use [email protected] for online purchases. All emails will still come to your main inbox, but you can easily filter them.

It’s great for tracking which companies are selling your data too. Just remember that this method doesn’t hide your real email address from savvy marketers who might strip out the ‘+’ part.
