Seeking a straightforward Google Sheets method to monitor monthly spending and repeated charges

I have recently moved out and want to keep an eye on my income and spending instead of relying only on my monthly credit card statements. I’ve explored various options in this community but found most to be overly complex for my requirements. For instance, while the Budget Tracking Tool by The Measure of a Plan was almost ideal, it lacked a feature for recurring expenses. Since a majority of my payments, such as utilities and subscriptions, occur regularly, entering them manually from my bank statement into Google Sheets feels inefficient. I have fixed costs, like my internet service for the year, so I wish to input those along with other variable expenses like dining out. This would help me generate a monthly overview and allow comparisons with past months. Are there any Google Sheets templates available for this purpose, or would you suggest any apps that are more suitable? I appreciate any recommendations!

One simple method I’ve used in Google Sheets to track monthly expenses and recurring charges is to create a custom template. I set up columns for the name of the expense, category, and whether it’s a one-time or recurring charge. At the start of each month, I input fixed costs and use basic formulas to calculate total expenses. For recurring expenses, using Google Sheets’ capabilities to duplicate rows works well. Conditional formatting to highlight overspending helps me easily spot categories that need review.

Consider utilizing Google Sheets’ built-in Google Finance functions to streamline the tracking of monthly transactions. You can set up tabs for categorizing expenses like ‘Utilities,’ ‘Subscriptions,’ and ‘Entertainment,’ and use formulas to automatically update these whenever you enter expenditures. For recurring expenses, setting up a separate sheet where you log each recurring charge and using formulas to link these to your main dashboard can save time. This way, you only need to update one area monthly, which aids in generating an overview or achieving easy month-to-month comparisons.

Another approach that worked for me is utilizing Google Sheets alongside Google Forms for data entry. I created a Google Form where I input each expense category and whether it’s regular or variable when I’m on the go. The responses automatically populate into a Google Sheet. For recurring expenses, I set monthly reminders to update any changes. This setup minimizes the hassle of manual entry from bank statements and gives me a clear month-to-month comparison. It’s especially useful if you regularly spend using your phone and want quick entry.

Have you tried using pivot tables in Google Sheets? They can simplify tracking your recurring expenses. Create a table for all expenses and use pivot tables to summarize by category/date. This method lets you quickly compare spending over different periods, and it auto-calculates totals. Worth a shot imo!
