Hey everyone,
I’m working on an ASP.NET 3.5 project and I want to add a cool multi-file upload feature. I really like how Google Docs handles this. It’s super smooth and user-friendly.
The thing is, Google Docs isn’t open source, so I can’t just peek at their code. I’m scratching my head trying to figure out how they did it.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing? I’d love some tips on how to make a slick multi-file uploader that works well and looks good. Maybe there are some libraries or techniques I should look into?
Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
I’ve been down this road before, and let me tell you, it’s not as daunting as it seems. While Google Docs is fancy, you can achieve something similar with a bit of elbow grease.
In my experience, AJAX Upload by Andrew Valums worked wonders for multi-file uploads in ASP.NET. It’s lightweight and gets the job done without much fuss. You’ll need to tweak the UI to make it look slick, but the core functionality is solid.
One thing I learned the hard way: always implement a progress bar. Users get antsy when uploading large files, and seeing that progress can make a world of difference. Also, don’t forget to handle timeouts gracefully. Nothing’s worse than an upload failing silently after 20 minutes.
Security-wise, make sure you’re validating file types server-side. I once made the mistake of only doing client-side checks, and boy, did that come back to bite me. Trust me, a little paranoia goes a long way when it comes to file uploads.
hey there, I’ve used plupload for smth similar. it’s pretty easy to set up and customize. just make sure u handle large files properly - maybe use chunked uploads. also, dont forget to add a nice progress bar. users love seeing their files actually uploading. good luck with ur project!
I’ve tackled a similar challenge in one of my projects. While Google Docs’ implementation is proprietary, you can achieve comparable functionality using open-source libraries. I’d recommend looking into Dropzone.js or Fine Uploader. These libraries offer robust multi-file upload capabilities and are quite customizable.
For the backend, consider implementing chunked file uploads. This approach allows for larger file transfers and provides a more stable upload process. You’ll need to handle the chunking on the server-side, reassembling the files once all chunks are received.
Remember to implement proper error handling and progress indicators. Users appreciate knowing the status of their uploads, especially for larger files.
Lastly, ensure you’re following best practices for security when handling file uploads. Validate file types, implement size limits, and scan for potential malware to protect your system.
