Seeking modern alternatives to WordPress for a small online store in 2024

Hey folks,

I’m in a bit of a pickle. The company I work for wants to set up a small online shop. We’re talking about 10 to 20 products tops, with customer feedback. My manager’s first thought was WordPress, but I’m not too keen on that idea.

I’ve been looking into more up-to-date options. I’m thinking about using React-based frameworks for the front end. But I’m stuck on what to use for the back end.

Has anyone tried any good content management systems that work well with modern web tech? I’m after something that’s not too heavy, works smoothly, and is simple to set up.

Also, if you’ve managed to talk your boss out of using WordPress, I’d love to hear how you did it. Any tips would be awesome!

Thanks in advance for any help!

I’ve been in your shoes, Tom. A couple years back, we faced a similar situation at my company. After some research and experimentation, we landed on using Next.js with Strapi as our CMS. It’s been a game-changer for us.

Next.js gives you that React goodness for the frontend, while Strapi handles the backend content management beautifully. It’s lightweight, flexible, and integrates well with various payment gateways. We found it much easier to customize than WordPress, and the learning curve wasn’t too steep.

As for convincing the boss, we did a small proof of concept. We built a basic product page using both WordPress and our Next.js/Strapi setup, then compared load times and ease of updates. The modern stack won hands down. That, coupled with some stats on security vulnerabilities in WordPress plugins, sealed the deal.

Just remember, whatever you choose, make sure it aligns with your team’s skills and long-term goals. Good luck with your project!
