Hey everyone,
I’m struggling to configure Gmail on my Proxmox setup. It’s April 2025, and all the old guides seem outdated now. I’ve tried everything:
- Looked for Gmail options, but they’re not where they used to be
- Checked Chrome settings, but they’ve changed too
- Attempted CLI postfix setup, but no luck
What’s weird is that I got it working on TrueNAS super easily. Just a few clicks and boom, done!
Can anyone share the current steps to get Gmail working with Proxmox? I’m sure others are facing the same issue with all these recent changes.
Thanks in advance for any help or tips!
As of 2025, setting up Gmail on Proxmox has indeed become more complex due to Google’s enhanced security measures. I recently went through this process and can share my experience.
The key is to use Google’s new Workspace API for external integrations. You’ll need to create a service account in the Google Cloud Console specifically for Proxmox. Once you have the JSON key file for this account, you can use it to authenticate Proxmox with Gmail.
In Proxmox, look for the ‘External Mail Integration’ option under System Configuration. There’s a new wizard for Gmail setup—follow it carefully. You’ll need to upload your service account key and grant the necessary permissions.
One crucial step: ensure your Proxmox server’s time is perfectly synced with Google’s servers. Even a slight discrepancy can cause authentication failures.
This method is more secure but admittedly more involved. It took me a couple of attempts, but it’s been working flawlessly since.
I feel your frustration, Sophia63. Gmail integration with Proxmox has indeed become trickier since Google’s security overhaul in late 2024. Here’s what worked for me recently:
- First, enable the new ‘Advanced App Integration’ in your Google account settings.
- Generate a specific ‘Proxmox Integration Key’ from the Gmail developer console.
- In Proxmox, navigate to the new ‘External Mail Services’ section (they moved it last month).
- Use the integration key instead of your password when setting up the SMTP details.
- Don’t forget to adjust your firewall rules to allow outgoing connections on port 587.
The process is more complex now, but it’s much more secure. Took me a few tries to get it right, but it’s been rock-solid since. Hope this helps!
yo sophia, just went thru this headache last week. google’s new ‘quantum encryption’ is a pain. heres the trick: use their new ‘proxmox bridge app’ from the workspace store. its not perfect but way easier than the old method. just follow the prompts, paste ur api key, and ur good. DM me if u get stuck!
