Hi everyone! I’m in a bit of a pickle with my email situation and could use some advice.
My main Gmail account ([email protected]) is getting swamped with spam lately. It’s pretty gross stuff and I’m not comfortable with it, even in the spam folder. I’m thinking about starting fresh with a new email address.
The thing is, everyone I know uses my current Gmail. I thought about forwarding emails, but I don’t want my name floating around in spam lists anymore. I know deleting the account won’t magically erase me from those lists, but at least they can’t reach me there anymore.
I’m also worried about my Google account stuff like Play Store purchases and YouTube Premium. Will I lose access to those if I delete my Gmail?
What do you think I should do? Keep the old account or start over? Any tips would be super helpful! Thanks!
I’ve been in a similar situation, and I can definitely relate to your frustration. After dealing with an overwhelming amount of spam in my primary email, I decided to take action. Here’s what worked for me:
Instead of completely ditching your old Gmail, consider creating a new one for important communications and gradually transitioning your contacts over. Keep the old account active but use it sparingly – mainly for services you don’t want to lose access to, like your Google Play purchases and YouTube Premium.
I found that using a password manager to create unique, complex email addresses for different services helped reduce spam significantly. Also, be more selective about giving out your email address in the future.
As for the existing spam, Gmail’s filters are pretty good, but you can also try creating custom filters to catch what slips through. It takes some time, but it’s worth it for a cleaner inbox.
Remember, starting completely fresh might seem tempting, but it can be a huge hassle. A hybrid approach worked wonders for me without losing access to important services.
hey man, i feel ur pain with the spam stuff. what i did was make a new email but keep the old 1 for accounts n stuff. use those gmail filters too, theyre pretty good. maybe try using a different name or adding numbers to ur new email. itll take time but its worth it to escape the spam hell
I’ve dealt with similar spam issues and found a middle-ground solution that might work for you. Instead of deleting your account, consider setting up aggressive filters in Gmail to catch more spam. You can also use the ‘block sender’ feature liberally.
For a cleaner approach, create a new Gmail address with a variation of your name. Use this for important contacts and gradually switch services over. Keep your old account for less critical stuff and existing subscriptions.
To maintain your Google account services, you can actually change the primary email associated with your Google account without deleting Gmail. This way, you keep your purchases and subscriptions while distancing yourself from the spam-filled address.
Remember, patience is key. It takes time to transition, but it’s less disruptive than a complete restart.
