Should I learn Figma as a graphic designer switching careers?

Hey everyone! I hope this isn’t a silly question but I really need some advice. I’ve been working as a graphic designer for about 4 years since finishing college. Now I’m looking for new job opportunities and noticed that almost every posting mentions Figma experience as a requirement.

The thing is, during my time at university we never used Figma in our design courses. Most applications are asking for specific years of experience with this tool. I’m wondering if I should invest time in learning Figma on my own or if my current design skills would be enough.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is Figma knowledge really that essential in today’s design market? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

honestly figma isn’t that hard to pick up if you’ve got solid design fundamentals already. took me maybe a week of evening practice to feel comfortable with it. the ui is pretty straightforward compared to other tools and theres tons of free resources online to get started with.

Learning Figma is absolutely worth your time, especially since you’re already job hunting. I made the transition from traditional design tools about two years ago and honestly wish I had done it sooner. The collaborative features alone make it invaluable in most modern design workflows - clients and team members can comment directly on designs, and real-time collaboration eliminates the constant back-and-forth of file sharing. What surprised me most was how quickly I picked it up. Your existing design fundamentals will transfer over seamlessly, and the interface is quite intuitive. I’d suggest dedicating a few weekends to learning the basics through their official tutorials, then practicing by recreating some of your existing work. The investment will pay off quickly since Figma skills are now considered standard rather than optional in most design roles.
