What are your thoughts on using Jira in design and development workflows?

Hey everyone! I’m a newbie in the design world and just starting to use Jira. I’ve heard different opinions from both designers and devs about this tool. I’m really curious to know what you all think about it. Do you enjoy using Jira? What are the pros and cons in your experience?

Some specific things I’m wondering about:

  • How user-friendly is it for non-tech folks?
  • Does it help with team communication?
  • Are there any tricks to make it work better for design tasks?

I’d love to hear your honest feedback and any advice you might have for someone just getting started with Jira. Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!

As someone who’s been using Jira for a few years now, I can say it’s a powerful tool, but it comes with a learning curve. For non-tech folks, it can be overwhelming at first. The interface isn’t the most intuitive, and there’s a lot of jargon to get used to.

That said, once you get the hang of it, Jira can significantly improve team communication and project tracking. It’s great for keeping everyone on the same page and managing complex workflows.

For design tasks, I’ve found it helpful to create custom issue types and fields. This allows you to tailor Jira to your specific design process. Also, integrating Jira with design tools like Figma or Sketch can streamline your workflow.

My advice? Start small, customize as you go, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from more experienced users. It takes time, but Jira can be a valuable asset to your design and development process.

I’ve been using Jira for a couple of years now, and I can say it’s a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s incredibly powerful for project management and tracking tasks. On the other, it can be a bit of a beast to tame, especially for designers.

One thing I’ve found really helpful is using the Kanban board view for design tasks. It gives a nice visual representation of the workflow and makes it easier to see what’s in progress, what’s blocked, and what’s ready for review.

As for team communication, Jira can be great if used properly. The comment feature on tickets is handy for discussing specific tasks, but it shouldn’t replace face-to-face (or video call) communication.

A word of caution though - it’s easy to get bogged down in the details and spend more time managing Jira than actually designing. My advice would be to keep it as simple as possible at first, and gradually add complexity as you become more comfortable with the tool. And don’t forget to take breaks from staring at all those tickets!

jira can be a bit of a pain at first, but it grows on ya. i’ve been using it for about a year now and it’s actually pretty helpful for keeping track of design tasks. the key is to customize it to fit ur workflow. don’t be afraid to play around with different setups til u find what works best for ur team. good luck!
