What data can a Telegram bot collect about users?

Hey everyone! I’m just starting out with Telegram bots and I’m curious about what they can actually see.

When you add a bot to a group chat, does it get any info about the people in that group?

Also, I’ve heard about this privacy mode thing. Whether it’s turned on or not, can the bot grab any details about someone who sends a message it can read?

I’m trying to figure out how much these bots can really know about us. Any insights would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

As someone who’s worked with Telegram bots, I can shed some light on this. Bots can access quite a bit of data, but it’s not unlimited. In group chats, bots can see usernames and user IDs of members who interact with them. They can also view messages sent in the group, unless privacy mode is enabled.

With privacy mode off, bots can see all messages in a group. When it’s on, they only see commands and messages specifically addressed to them. Bots can’t access phone numbers or email addresses unless a user explicitly shares that info.

It’s worth noting that bot creators can only access data the bot receives during its operation. Telegram doesn’t provide historical data from before the bot was added. Always read a bot’s privacy policy if you’re concerned about data collection.

yo, ive messed with bots before. they cant see much unless u talk to em directly. in groups, they just get basic stuff like usernames n IDs if u interact.

privacy mode limits what they see even more. but dont worry, they cant grab ur phone # or email unless u give it to em.

just be smart bout what u share n youll be fine!

I’ve been tinkering with Telegram bots for a while now, and I can tell you they’re pretty limited in what they can gather without user interaction. By default, bots only see messages explicitly sent to them or commands they’re programmed to recognize. They can’t just silently harvest data from group chats.

However, if a user interacts with the bot, it can collect the user’s Telegram ID, username (if set), and first name. Last names and profile pictures aren’t automatically accessible. In groups, bots can see member counts and basic chat info, but not detailed member lists.

One thing to keep in mind: bot creators can only access data their bot receives during active conversations. There’s no backdoor to historical chat data or user information that hasn’t been directly shared with the bot. Always be cautious about what you share, but don’t stress too much about bots secretly spying on everything you do.
