What distinguishes simple reflex agents from model-based reflex agents in artificial intelligence?

I’m studying different types of AI agents and I’m having trouble understanding the key differences between simple reflex agents and model-based reflex agents. I know they’re both important concepts in artificial intelligence, but I can’t figure out what makes them unique from each other.

Simple reflex agents work like automatic door sensors. They see something and react instantly with hardcoded rules. No memory, no context from before. Pure stimulus-response.

Model-based agents track what’s happening around them. They build a mental picture of their world and update it constantly. This helps when the current observation doesn’t show everything.

I’ve used both in production. Simple reflex agents work great for straightforward stuff like spam filtering or basic alerts. But when I built a system tracking user behavior over time, we needed model-based agents since they remember previous interactions and make smarter calls.

The big advantage is model-based agents handle partially observable environments. If a robot loses sight of an obstacle, it remembers it’s there and navigates around it.

Simple reflex agents forget the obstacle exists once they can’t see it. That’s why they need fully observable environments where everything important stays visible.
