I recently orchestrated a set of AI agents that evaluate DMN rules and route cases needing human review. We treated the DMN table as the first-pass filter: most cases are fully automated, but when a confidence threshold or an exception hit occurs, the workflow creates a human task and bundles context, decision trace, and suggested rationale.
A few patterns that helped: keep the handoff lightweight (minimal fields for the human to decide), include the AI’s reasoning plus the DMN rule row that fired, and attach a small triage queue for urgent items. For long-running decisions, store the partial state and re-check rules after human input. Using RAG to pull relevant docs into the task improved review speed. Also, instrument everything — timings, who reviewed, and why — so you can tune thresholds later.

We used a two-tier handoff: a quick triage queue for obvious fixes and a deeper review queue for ambiguous or high-impact cases. Each task included the DMN trace, the parts of the policy used, and a short recommended action. That separation reduced reviewer fatigue and sped up SLA compliance.
Another thing: include a fallback path that logs the case and retries the decision after a delay if the human reviewer doesn’t act. It avoids stalled processes in long-running flows.
In one project I set up autonomous agents to pre-process claims against a DMN engine. When thresholds were exceeded the agents created a human review item with an attached evidence bundle and a compact decision summary. The human then had three simple actions: approve, request info, or flag for legal. Each action triggered an automated next step. The key was minimizing the cognitive load on reviewers: give them the exact rule that caused the exception, the relevant document excerpts (via RAG), and a suggested action with pros and cons. That led to faster reviews and fewer escalations.
Design the handoff to include reproducible context: the DMN rule ID, input snapshot, model outputs, and the retrieval sources. Provide reviewers with the option to annotate why they changed the outcome. Store those annotations to refine thresholds and retrain agents. Consistent telemetry is essential to iterate.
