What's happening with the Google Fit app after API closure?

Hey everyone,

I just heard that Google is shutting down the Fit API. But I’m confused about what this means for the Android app. Does anyone know if the app will keep working? Or are they getting rid of it too?

I use Google Fit a lot to track my workouts and daily steps. It would suck if it suddenly stopped working on my phone. Has Google said anything about the future of the app?

If they do kill the app, what are some good alternatives? I’m looking for something that can track steps, workouts, and maybe even sleep. Any recommendations would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance for any info or suggestions!

i heard the app should keep working for now, but who knows with google lol. they might kill it off later. if ur worried, maybe try strava? it tracks runs n stuff pretty good. or mapmyfitness is ok too. just make sure to backup ur data from fit just incase!

As someone who’s been using Google Fit for years, I share your concern about its future. From what I’ve gathered, the API shutdown primarily affects third-party developers, not the app itself. Google hasn’t announced any plans to discontinue the Android app, so it should continue functioning for now.

That said, given Google’s history of abruptly shutting down services, it’s wise to have a backup plan. I’ve recently started exploring alternatives like Fitbit (now owned by Google) and Samsung Health. Both offer comprehensive tracking for steps, workouts, and sleep.

Personally, I’ve found Samsung Health to be quite robust, even on non-Samsung devices. It integrates well with other apps and provides detailed insights. Whatever you choose, I’d recommend exporting your Google Fit data soon, just in case. Better safe than sorry when it comes to years of health data!

While Google hasn’t officially announced plans to discontinue the Fit app, the API closure does raise some concerns. Based on my experience with similar situations, it’s likely the app will continue functioning in the short term, but its long-term future is uncertain. As a precaution, I’ve started exploring alternatives like Garmin Connect and MyFitnessPal. These platforms offer comprehensive tracking features and have proven more stable over time. Garmin Connect, in particular, has impressed me with its detailed analytics and wide range of supported devices. Regardless of which alternative you choose, I’d strongly advise exporting your Google Fit data soon. It’s always better to be prepared, especially when it comes to personal health information.
