What's the best way to organize and monitor test cases using Jira?

Hey everyone,

I just started a new job and found out they don’t have any system for test cases. They use Jira for everything else, but test cases are totally missing. I’m trying to figure out how to fix this.

Does anyone have experience setting up test case management in Jira? I’m looking for something that won’t break the bank. I’ve been checking out XRay and TestRail, but I’m not sure if they’re the best options.

I’m also thinking about maybe making our own simple tool for this. Has anyone tried that before? Is it worth the effort?

I used to work with test cases in Azure DevOps, so I’m hoping to find something similar. Any advice would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

I’ve been through the test case management struggle too, and I can say from experience that Zephyr Scale (formerly TM4J) is a solid choice for Jira integration. It’s reasonably priced and offers a good balance of features without overwhelming you.

One thing I found particularly useful was its ability to create test cycles and link them directly to Jira issues. This made it easy to track which features were thoroughly tested and which needed more attention.

If you’re concerned about budget, you might want to look into Xray’s cloud version. It’s more affordable than their server option and still packs a punch in terms of functionality.

As for building your own tool, I’d caution against it unless you have dedicated resources. We tried that route initially and ended up spending more time maintaining the tool than actually testing. Stick with established solutions if you can - they’ll save you headaches in the long run.

I’ve been in a similar situation, and after trying various options, we settled on using Jira’s native functionality combined with the Zephyr for Jira add-on. It’s cost-effective and integrates seamlessly with existing Jira workflows. We create test cases as sub-tasks under user stories, which allows for easy tracking and linking to requirements. For monitoring, we use Jira’s built-in dashboards and reports, customized to show test coverage and execution status. This approach has worked well for our team, providing a good balance between functionality and simplicity without the need for external tools or custom development.

hey stella, i’ve been there. we use zephyr scale with jira and it’s alrdy solid. a custom tool can be cool but might be a headache. xray’s decent but pricey, and testlodge is simpler yet effective. maybe check them out?

Although Xray and TestRail aren’t bad, they can be rather expensive, and at times feel heavier than required for a team.

One good alternative i can suggest is AIO Tests. It is Jira-native, low-weight, cost-effective compared to the heavyweights, and with it you can manage manual + automated tests to stories/bugs; and dashboards without leaving Jira. Plus, it is closer to the Azure DevOps experience you have been used to, with less overhead to setup.

If you want something basic, and with Jira integration, I would recommended start with AIO Tests, and then bypass to something larger if necessary.
