Need Help Closing My Jira Project
I’m currently wrapping up a project, but there are some tasks left in the backlog. My team has concluded their work, and we don’t intend to address those remaining tickets anymore.
I would like to close this project in Jira appropriately but I’m uncertain about the correct procedure. Do I need to manage the open tickets first, or can I proceed to close the project despite the unfinished tasks?
I’ve searched through the project settings but haven’t found a clear option to “close project.” Perhaps I’m overlooking something simple?
I would greatly appreciate any advice on the best approach to take in this situation. Thank you!
Jira doesn’t have a clear “close project” button, which trips people up. You’ll need to archive the project instead - just make sure you’ve got admin access first. I’d handle any leftover tickets before archiving. Bulk close them with something like “Won’t Do” or “Cancelled” so your project metrics stay clean. Go to Project Settings > Details and you’ll see the archive option. Once archived, the project becomes read-only but keeps all its history. Pro tip: update the project description to show it’s done before you archive it.
Clean up those leftover tickets before archiving. Either bulk-move them to another active project if they’re still useful, or close them with resolutions like “Deferred” or “Not Required”. Archiving’s pretty simple once you’re in Project Settings, but there’s no undo - so export any reports or data you’ll need first. I learned this the hard way when I had to bug our Jira admin to restore archived project data for a post-mortem. Also heads up - archived projects still count against your project limit on some Jira plans, so time it right.
just bulk close those leftover tickets - set em to “won’t fix” or whatever fits. once that’s done, head to project settings to archive. don’t worry too much - archiving keeps stuff readable if you ever need to look back at it. just keep in mind, unarchiving needs admin help.
