What's the simplest method to transfer Outlook 2007 messages to Gmail?

Switching from Outlook 2007 to Gmail: Need help moving emails

I’m trying to ditch my old POP3 email setup and go all-in with Gmail. The problem is, I’ve got tons of old messages stored in an Outlook 2007 PST file. I know forwarding them is an option, but that would just dump everything into one big email with attachments in Gmail, right? Not ideal.

Does anyone know a better way to get these emails into Gmail without losing the individual message format? I’m looking for something straightforward that won’t take forever. Any tips or tricks would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me on this. I’m not super tech-savvy, so simpler solutions are definitely preferred.

I’ve found that using Google’s official migration tool, GSMMO (Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Outlook), is the most straightforward method. It’s designed specifically for moving from Outlook to Gmail and preserves message structure and attachments. You’ll need to download it from Google’s site, but the setup is quite simple. It allows you to select which folders to transfer and handles the process automatically. Just ensure you have enough storage in your Gmail account before starting. The transfer can take some time depending on the volume of emails, but it’s hands-off once initiated. This approach has worked well for me in similar situations, maintaining email integrity without requiring extensive technical knowledge.

hey, i used thunderbird to do this once. it’s free and pretty easy. just import ur outlook stuff into thunderbird, then set up gmail imap in it. drag n drop emails from outlook folder to gmail folder. takes a bit but keeps everything seperate. good luck!

I’ve been through this exact scenario myself, and I found a surprisingly simple solution that worked wonders. What I did was use the IMAP feature in Gmail. Here’s the gist:

First, enable IMAP in your Gmail settings. Then, in Outlook 2007, add your Gmail account as an IMAP account. Once that’s set up, you can literally drag and drop your old emails from your Outlook folders into the Gmail folders that appear in Outlook.

The beauty of this method is that it preserves the original email structure and metadata. It’s not the fastest process if you have thousands of emails, but it’s straightforward and doesn’t require any additional software.

One word of caution - make sure you have plenty of space in your Gmail account before you start. You’d be surprised how quickly those old emails can eat up your storage quota.
