When you have 400+ ai models available, how do you actually pick the right one for each automation step?

I recently discovered that Latenode gives you access to over 400 AI models through one subscription. Models like GPT-5, Claude Sonnet, Gemini, and apparently a bunch of specialized models I’ve never heard of.

My immediate reaction: that’s overwhelming. How am I supposed to know which model to use for a specific task? I’ve always just defaulted to ChatGPT or Claude because they’re the names I recognize. But if there are 400+ options, there’s probably a smarter way to match models to specific jobs.

For context, I’m building workflows that involve data analysis, content generation, and code generation (for JavaScript snippets inside automations). Right now I’m just guessing which model to use. It’s not costing me thousands in API fees since the pricing model is execution-based, not per-model-call, but I’m probably not getting optimal results.

So I want to know: is there a systematic way to choose the right model for different tasks? Are there models that are specifically great for code generation versus content writing versus data analysis? Do I actually need to test multiple models, or can I learn from what other people have figured out? And how much of a difference does it actually make, or am I overthinking this?
