Which automation platform should I choose: N8n vs Make?

Hey everyone!

I’m pretty new to workflow automation and trying to figure out where to begin. I’ve been looking at different platforms and narrowed it down to N8n and Make (formerly Integromat).

I’m curious about:

  • Which one has a better learning curve for beginners?
  • What are the main differences between these two tools?
  • Are there any specific use cases where one performs better than the other?
  • What would you recommend as the best starting point for someone just getting into automation?

I’d really appreciate any insights from people who have experience with either platform. Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve used both for about two years. Your choice depends on how technical you are and your budget. Make wins on user experience - the visual editor’s more intuitive and error handling’s better. But N8n gets way more cost-effective when you scale up. The pricing models are totally different: Make charges per operation (gets pricey fast), while N8n’s self-hosted option means you just pay for server resources. Make’s got great templates and community scenarios for beginners, but N8n’s code nodes give you way more flexibility for custom stuff. I’d start with Make’s free tier to learn automation basics, then switch to N8n if you need advanced features or want to cut costs.

I’ve used both platforms extensively. Your choice depends on what you need and your tech skills. Make’s more polished and beginner-friendly – great docs, intuitive interface, and helpful templates that’ll get you up and running fast. N8n’s the better pick if you want open-source flexibility. You can self-host it, which means better control over your data and lower costs for bigger operations. My advice? Try both free tiers first and see which one clicks with how you work.

make’s definitely easier to start with, but it gets pricey fast. n8n has a steeper learning curve, but once you get it, it’s solid. if you’re just starting, go with make first - fewer headaches, and you can switch to n8n later if you need more.
