Why hasn't Google implemented dark theme in Google Docs yet?

I’m really frustrated that Google Docs still doesn’t have a dark theme option. Microsoft Word already has dark mode across all their platforms - desktop, web, and mobile versions. Even newer writing apps from small companies include dark mode as a standard feature.

I’ve been waiting for this feature for years now. It’s such a basic request that many users have been asking for. My eyes get tired when I’m working on documents late at night with that bright white background.

Does anyone know if Google has mentioned anything about adding dark mode to Docs? It seems like such an obvious feature that should have been added a long time ago. What’s taking them so long to implement something that other word processors have had for years?

Google actually tends to roll out interface changes very slowly and cautiously across their productivity suite. I’ve noticed they usually test features extensively in Gmail and Drive before bringing them to Docs. The challenge with dark mode in a document editor is more complex than people realize - it’s not just inverting colors. They need to ensure text remains readable, comments stay visible, and collaborative features work properly in dark mode without affecting how others see the document. I suspect they’re also waiting to implement it consistently across Sheets and Slides simultaneously rather than doing a piecemeal rollout. Based on their recent pattern with other Google Workspace updates, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it sometime in 2024, but Google rarely announces these interface changes ahead of time.

honestly i think google just doesnt prioritize user comfort over their design philosophy. theyve been stubborn about keeping that clean white look for ages. maybe they think it looks more professional or somthing? its annoying tho especially when you’re writing late at night

I’ve been dealing with this same issue for months now. What bothers me most is that Google has dark mode available in practically every other service they offer - YouTube, Gmail, Chrome, even Google Search has a dark theme option. The inconsistency is really puzzling when you think about it. I ended up installing a browser extension that forces dark mode on web pages, but it’s not perfect and sometimes messes with the formatting or makes certain elements hard to read. The fact that they can implement dark themes across their entire ecosystem but somehow can’t figure it out for their word processor suggests there might be some technical hurdle we’re not aware of, or maybe it’s just not high enough on their priority list. Either way, it’s pretty disappointing considering how long users have been requesting this basic accessibility feature.
