Why use Google Docs when MS Word files are already available?

I’m exploring new methods to arrange my teaching materials. I came across an excellent tutorial on utilizing Google Docs to compile a lesson plan in sheets that includes links to resources and videos, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

After logging into Google Drive for the first time in years, I tried to get a grip on how files are organized. I uploaded a document on nuclear physics (.docx), but when I opened it in Docs, it rendered incorrectly. A warning appeared stating that certain Word features weren’t supported, resulting in misplaced images and shapes, as well as formulas displaying incorrectly (for instance, it showed “4 2 He” instead of the correct helium formula).

I can understand the benefits of Google Docs for users who rely entirely on it. However, the lack of compatibility with MS Word renders it practically useless for my needs. Is there any solution to this issue? Is this problem unique to me? I do appreciate the linking function, but I cannot abandon MS Word.
