Would you tidy up your living space if it was listed as a task in project management software?

I’m pretty good at finishing tasks in our project tracking system. It got me thinking why I’m not as efficient with personal stuff.

Here’s what I came up with:

  1. I don’t waste time deciding what to do. I just grab the next important thing.
  2. Someone’s counting on me to get it done. There’s a real downside if I don’t.
  3. The task has clear start and end points. My own projects tend to grow endlessly because I’m wearing all the hats.

It makes me wonder if we could use this for non-work stuff too. Maybe we could start a group to help each other stay on track with personal tasks? What do you think? Would you join something like that?

I’m curious to hear if anyone else has tricks for getting things done outside of work. How do you stay motivated?

I’ve actually experimented with using project management software for personal tasks, including tidying up. It definitely helped initially, but I found the novelty wore off after a few weeks. The key difference I noticed was the lack of external accountability. At work, there are consequences for not completing tasks, but at home, it’s easier to ignore or postpone.

That said, I’ve had some success with a modified approach. Instead of full-blown project management software, I use a simple to-do list app with reminders. I’ve also found that breaking larger tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks works well. For example, instead of ‘clean the living room,’ I’ll list ‘vacuum floors’ and ‘dust surfaces’ separately.

Ultimately, I think the most effective strategy is to build habits rather than relying solely on task management systems. It takes time, but once tidying becomes a routine, it feels less like a chore and more like a natural part of your day.

yeah, i’d totally give it a shot. sometimes i need that extra push, u know? like, seeing a task on a list makes it feel more official. plus, checking stuff off is kinda satisfying. might even trick my brain into thinking cleaning is actually productive work lol. worth a try, right?

I’ve tried something similar and it actually worked pretty well for me. The key was treating my living space like a project with deadlines and milestones. I set up recurring tasks for things like vacuuming and dusting, and larger one-off tasks for decluttering specific areas.

What really made it stick was gamifying the process. I gave myself points for completing tasks and set up rewards for reaching certain milestones. It sounds silly, but seeing my ‘productivity score’ go up was surprisingly motivating.

One unexpected benefit was how it changed my perception of housework. Instead of seeing it as a never-ending chore, it became a series of small, achievable goals. This mindset shift made a big difference in my motivation to keep things tidy.

Of course, it’s not a perfect system. Some days I still struggle to get things done. But overall, it’s been a game-changer for keeping my living space in order.
